Koolewong
CENTRAL COAST
Koolewong keeps a low profile on the Brisbane Water
Koolewong is a quaint suburb of the Central Coast. Situated high on the hills overlooking the Brisbane Water, it is named after the Aboriginal word for koala. Nestled geographically between the towns of Gosford and Woy Woy, there are numerous coves, bays and beaches to explore.
The Koolewong Firetrail is just one of many hikes in the region. It can be accessed via a private drive located at the southern end of Glenrock Parade. Along the hike heading North is the Koolewong Firetrail Lookout providing views to the East over Brisbane Water.
An abundance of native vegetation attracts a wide variety of wildlife including Blue-tongued lizards, Broad-tailed Geckos, Brush-tail Possums, Laughing Kookaburras, Australian Magpies, Rainbow Lorikeets, Sulfur-crested Cockatoos, Little Wattlebirds, Eastern Whipbirds, and Eastern Koels.
Another visitor to the area from late-September to February is the Channel-billed Cuckoo which has the notoriety of being the worlds largest Cuckoo and the largest parasitic Cuckoo which means that it lays its eggs in other species’ nests.
